It has been a considerable time since the first circular was released, making it compulsory for all individuals to link their Aadhar card and Pan card link. This measure was put in place to ensure that every taxpayer has a unique identification number associated with their PAN, which will aid in reducing tax evasion.

According to a circular issued by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), all taxpayers must link their PAN with their Aadhaar by March 31, 2023, or face consequences under the I-T Act and experience various implications.
As the deadline to link the two cards rapidly approaches, it’s essential to know the consequences of failing to do so. If you do not link your Aadhaar and PAN before the March 31 deadline, your PAN will become inoperative, as per the Income Tax Department. The CBDT circular stated that “Rule 114AAA of the Income-tax Rules provides that if PAN of a person has become inoperative, he will not be able to furnish, intimate, or quote his PAN and shall be liable to all the consequences under the Act for such failure.”
If you link your PAN with your Aadhaar now, you will be subject to a late fee of ₹1,000 as the last date for linking without a penalty was June 30, 2022, which has already passed.
Filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) could also pose a challenge if your PAN and Aadhaar numbers are not linked. In such cases, the Income Tax Department may reject your ITR, which could hinder your ability to receive a tax refund.
As per BQ Prime, failing to link your PAN and Aadhaar could also lead to difficulties in accessing certain government services, including obtaining subsidies, applying for a passport, and opening a bank account. If the two documents are not linked, it could impede your ability to utilize these services.
